Working for the past few weeks

Cabin accomadationsExactly 12 days have past since I last posted, but not because I didn’t get around to it, I just couldn’t find the time.  Like I mentioned before in my previous post, I had a 2 week contract with a society working as a first aid attendant up at Camp Jubilee.  The first week of July was training which consisted of various guest speakers; I definitely learned a lot about how to deal with kids with ADD or autism.  I guess the first week was a preparation for the things we were suppose to expect when actually dealing with the kids at the camp.  Eureka camp wasn’t an ordinary camp, but a camp for children with invisible disabilities.  Kids which wouldn’t have fit in in an ordinary school or camp environment.

Of course, sometimes their autism/ADD acts up and we really see the extreme sides of it.  Most of the time, it’s sudden fistfights that would happen and the times when they don’t listen.  Sometimes the camp counselors were stressed from all the events, but at the end of the camp everyone pretty much had a pretty good time and definitely learned from the amazing experience.

Me and the kidsSo my job there wasn’t a camp counselor but to do first aid.  The first day there I set up the medication schedule and for the rest of the week gave medication to the kids at appropriate times.  I was on call for any emergency/injuries that might happen, but for the rest of the time, I was free to do whatever I liked.  I chose to spend it with the kids at the archery range or out kayaking and it was pretty cool!  Nevertheless I ended up with some mosquito bites from being outdoor all the time (darn those pesky mosquitoes)!

Another thing I loved about the job was that my room overlooked the ocean.  So when I woke up in the morning the first thing I saw was the dock and the ocean, it was quite a change from home.  And the breeze definitely made it all that much better.  I really noticed the difference in temperature coming home from the dock.  All in all, it was another life experience I was happy to have and the people I met really taught me how to handle myself in certain situations.

Since there’s one more week until Australia, I must really go pack again.  After Australia is the Florida trip!
